Something that I really loved about the book was how mysterious a lot of the antagonists in it were. A lot of the stories in the book explore paranoia, isolation and mental illness. The Houseguest is a great collection of horror short-stories that deserves way more attention. She is a writer obsessed with obsession, who makes nightmares come to life through the everyday: loneliness sinks in easily like a razor-sharp knife, some sort of evil lurks in every shadow, delusion takes the form of strange and very real creatures. The Houseguest: And Other Stories by Amparo Dávila is a must-read. ![]() With acute psychological insight, Dávila follows her characters to the limits of desire, paranoia, insomnia, and fear. ![]() Like those of Kafka, Poe, Leonora Carrington, or Shirley Jackson, Amparo Dávila’s stories are terrifying, mesmerizing, and expertly crafted―you’ll finish each one gasping for air. From the moment Lord Pitt’s sappers started digging the underground passageway beneath the walled fortifications several days ago, I’d known it was only a matter of time before they broke into the castle. After all, I’d spent the past night, like everyone else, anxiously listening to the steady ring of picks as sappers chipped away the last of the stone under the wall. The news of the collapse didn’t surprise me. “The inner bailey wall to the south is down, my lady, and the castle will soon be overrun.” The soldier faltered in the doorway of my chambers, his armor slick with the blood of battle. ![]() ![]() ![]() It reached #77 on the USA Today Bestseller list.
